Boyle is also known for directing the films Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and The Beach. Boyle said he drank lemonade at the club when he was a child with his father, who used to run it.
"He used to get up and sing 'oh Danny Boyle', which was pretty embarrassing when you're 11 years old," he said.
Boyle said music was one of his biggest influences and mentioned Bury band Elbow, who are also being considered for a Freeman honour, among his favourites.
Boyle is also directed the films Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and The Beach.
