Two fire crews from Newry and one from Warrenpoint helped fight the blaze.
Heat damage
Fire service station commander Dermot Rooney said a lot of internal smoke damage had been caused to the interior of the house.
"There was a lot of localised heat damage. Because the incident is still under investigation, and although not specific to this incident, I would like to remind people that this is a timely opportunity to revisit the testing of their smoke alarms," he said.
"There was a smoke alarm fitted in this premises, whether or not it activated is under investigation."
It is understood the victim lived alone and, according to local people, was a widow in her 50s.
Police and fire investigators are working to establish the exact cause of the blaze.
