Toads and frogs are being squashed on the way to their breeding grounds by motorists ignoring road closure signs at Charlcombe Lane near Bath.

During the peak breeding season, lasts late February through March, the lane is closed to traffic.

Volunteers who help the amphibians on their journey say some drivers are taking no notice of diversions and are killing the toads.

The frogs and toads are put into buckets and walked across the lane.

The problem for the migrating toads making the journey downhill towards the breeding ground is they become trapped by the high garden walls of Charlcombe Lane.

The walls funnel the toads down the lane where they are often killed or injured by the traffic.
