Mr Blumenthal told the Daily Telegraph: "After 14 years of work, to come to the point where you have to close the restaurant is upsetting. Mr Blumenthal said the source of the symptoms remained a mystery, particularly because he employs hygiene consultants and gets samples analysed routinely - which have all come back negative.
"The Fat Duck for me is very much a labour of love. We have 40-odd chefs for 40 customers. The chef told the BBC: "The sixth sense is a virus and environmental health are saying the same thing. They did say, you know what, it's looking increasingly likely as each day goes by that absolutely nothing comes up and then they put it down to a non-specific virus.

The chef said the source of their symptoms remained a mystery, particularly because he employs hygiene consultants and gets samples analysed routinely - which have all come back negative. Mr Blumenthal said he had even had some of his staff who had been to Venezuela on holiday tested to see if they had brought any illness back with them, tests which proved negative.
He told the paper: "All our systems are checked and monitored. We have done everything in our power and I've never come across anything like this before. He said: "We had some customers phone and report illness, with the best will in the world, all restaurants all over the place will have this occasionally, but then there was pattern forming.
"We called in the environmental health officers and they said it could be a non-specific virus which is going around. But all our staff have been tested and nothing has shown up." "Whilst it didn't escalate it became more regular and it just got to the point that all the tests were coming back clean, completely clear, and last Monday I had to close the restaurant."
