'Very sad day'
Tony Beard, Hyde United's director, said: "Chris was popular wherever he went.
"In addition to his beloved Hyde United, he travelled to sporting events and concerts throughout the UK and has been dearly missed by both pupils and teachers at Littlemoss School.
"The strength of feeling towards Chris was highlighted by the fact his pupils posted goodwill messages on our website.
"He had many friends at Hyde United and in non-league football and today is a very sad day indeed for all concerned.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Janet and Stephen, and other members of his family and friends at this difficult time."
A minute's silence will be observed before Saturday's game with AFC Telford in Mr Hilton's memory.
