David Riding, of Lake View, Wingate, was convicted in December 2008 of making an explosive device under suspicious circumstances. | David Riding, of Lake View, Wingate, was convicted in December 2008 of making an explosive device under suspicious circumstances. |
The 21-year-old, described as a "bedroom Rambo", was jailed for 12 months on Friday.
During his trial at Durham Crown Court, Riding had claimed he made the device just to see if he could, and had no plans to detonate it.
'Public shocked' | |
It was created, using information found on the internet, from a copper pipe and powder from commercial fireworks.
In mitigation, Ian West said Riding was a "bedroom Rambo" whose actions were the result of nothing more than youthful stupidity and irresponsibility.
During sentencing, at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Christopher Prince said he was jailing Riding as a deterrent to others.
"I think this offence is too serious to attract a community penalty," he said.
"The public would be shocked if they thought that anybody could make such a dangerous item as this and not expect to receive a custodial sentence, except in the most exceptional circumstances." |
