Nearly £19m is to be spent modernising the electrical infrastructure of a north Wales hospital, it has been announced.

Health Minister Edwina Hart announced the assembly government funding for Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

The funding will allow the electrical infrastructure - the majority of which is over 25 years old - to be replaced.

The North West Wales NHS Trust said it welcomed the "essential investment" to update the hospital opened in 1984.

Ysbyty Gwynedd is the largest hospital in north west Wales and since it opened the floor space has expanded by 75% as new services have been developed and new departments established.

It is expected the electrical work will start in March and be completed by January or February 2012.

Essential investment

Ms Hart said: "Ysbyty Gwynedd has established itself as one the leading hospitals in north west Wales.

"The care that its staff provide is of the highest quality and this investment will mean that the facilities where patients receive that care will meet those same high standards."

Elfed Roberts, chairman of the North West Wales NHS Trust, said: "We welcome this essential investment in updating the electrical infrastructure at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

"Demands on the original hospital have greatly increased since it was opened in 1984 and the constant expansion of facilities on site require ongoing investment to ensure it is able to continue to provide a high level of service."
