Man dies following M6 'stabbing'' Lorry driver held over stabbing
(about 2 hours later)
A man has died after an incident on the M6 in Birmingham. A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was fatally stabbed and two others injured.
West Midlands Police said officers were called to reports of men receiving stab wounds between junctions 6 and 7 northbound. Warwickshire Police said the 41-year-old, whose first language is not English, claimed he had used a knife to defend himself in an attempted robbery.
"Initial indications" suggest the men's injuries were sustained during an earlier incident in Coleshill, Warwickshire, a police spokesman said. Officers were called to Station Road Industrial Estate in Coleshill, at 0620 GMT where the driver was alleged to have suffered a head injury.
Two men remain in a serious condition. Junction 7 northbound at Great Barr is expected to be closed until midday. West Midlands Police closed junction seven of the M6 as part of the inquiry.
Two other males, one aged 15, are in a serious condition in hospital with stab wounds.
'Curtain-sided lorry'
Officers said the driver, who was described as Mediterranean, indicated he was defending himself during an attempted robbery on his curtain-sided lorry.
Police said West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to between junction 6 and 7 northbound of the M6 about 0630 GMT to reports of "a man in a car was bleeding badly".
But on arrival at the scene no-one was found.
However, a short time later three injured men attended Sandwell Hospital "bleeding heavily", a police spokeswoman said.
Junction 7, northbound at Great Barr, is expected to be closed until midday.
Both forces have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
Det Ch Insp Adrian McGee, of Warwickshire Police, said they wanted to hear from anyone who had "information from any of the locations", including people who saw the men and youth arrive at the hospital.
