Cordon after 'device detonated' Device explodes in built-up area

A number of streets in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, have been cordoned off following reports that a device has been detonated. A pipe bomb has been found by the security forces in a residential area of County Antrim.
The device is understood to have been ignited on an area of grass near houses in Mayfield Court shortly before 2125 GMT on Wednesday. The device was thrown at a car in Newtownabbey just before 2130 GMT on Wednesday. It ignited on an area of grass near houses at Mayfield Court.
There are no reports of injuries. Army technical officers are at the scene. No one was injured but two cars were slighted damaged. A number of streets were cordoned off during an operation by the police and Army.
"Inquiries to establish the exact nature of the object are ongoing," said a police spokeswoman. The device has been taken away for forensic examination.
The police have appealed for anyone with information to get in contact with them.
