'Horrific' spike attack on woman

A woman taken to hospital with a spike embedded near her collar bone was stabbed as she relaxed in her garden, police have revealed.

The 40-year-old was injured with a metal road pole outside her home in Marian Road, Prestatyn, Denbighshire, at around 2030 GMT on January 24.

Officers are treating the "horrific" attack as attempted murder and are appealing for information.

A 41-year-old man arrested after the attack has been released on bail.

Firefighters were called after the attack and had to use cutting equipment to make the pole shorter to take the victim to hospital.

The woman was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and then Broad Green Hospital in Liverpool for the spike to be removed.

North Wales Police said the surgery was successful and the victim is making good progress.

Det Insp Martin Davies said: "This is a horrific attack on a defenceless woman as she was sat in her garden.

"It is fortunate that the incident did not result in more serious consequences. I urge anyone who has information, however insignificant they may feel it to be, to contact my team.

"We have a team of officers dedicated to this inquiry and we are asking for the support of the public to help us with our investigations."
