Job loss fears for bus builders Bus-builder proposes 235 job cuts
(about 2 hours later)
There are fears that redundancies will be announced later at Wrightbus - the UK's largest coachbuilder. The UK's largest coach-building firm, Wrightbus, has announced plans to make 235 staff redundant.
Workers have been called to a series of lunch-time meetings at the offices of the Ballymena-based bus builder. The Ballymena-based company, which employs 1,000 people, said a 90-day consultation process has begun.
Wrightbus employs 1,000 people and supplies vehicles across the world. It is not clear how many workers could be affected by job cuts. "We will be actively working with union and employee representatives to explore ways in which we can reduce the number of job losses," a spokesperson said.
A statement from the company is expected to be released on Tuesday afternoon. He said the sudden cancellation of a substantial order from one of its largest customers was a factor.
Earlier this month, Wrightbus signed an £11m partnership deal with a Dutch coachbuilder to supply 57 buses for use in London by operator Arriva.
But it is understood that amid the global economic recession two substantial contracts have recently been cancelled, forcing job cuts.
Democratic Unionist Party Assembly member Ian Paisley jnr said: "It is very worrying. I have heard there may have to be substantial job losses."
