The amount of National Insurance numbers issued to foreign workers went up last year by 27,000 to 733,000, the Office for National Statistics says. There was a 7% fall in the number of National Insurance numbers issued to foreign nationals in the year to September 2008, figures show.
The 3.9% increase was the lowest since 2002 but included a 4.75% rise in workers from new EU countries, with Poles making up the biggest number. The statistics show 720,000 NI numbers were issued to foreign nationals, compared with 776,000 in the same period the previous year.
