A chief inspector who is head of roads policing is among officers being investigated after a crash involving a police car, BBC Scotland can reveal.

Grampian Police said Tom Forrester's position was currently vacant but would not say if he had been suspended.

A senior officer and the area procurator fiscal are investigating the accident on the B977 Belhelvie to Dyce road in November last year.

Grampian Police said it was not appropriate to comment on identities.

No other force is involved in the investigation.

A spokeswoman said the chief inspector post was currently vacant with Supt Sandra Holden having responsibility for roads policing.
