Detectives from the Met's Operation Trident were informed and searches are taking place around the scene. Searches are taking place nearby and a Metropolitan Police spokesman said the inquiry was in its "very early stages".
A police spokesman said the investigation was in its "very early stages". No arrests have been made as yet. Locals said the victim, described as a stocky black man, was shot in the head after leaving his house. There have been no arrests.
Raymon Bedi, 19, who runs the nearby Barry Off Licence Food Market, said: "One of my customers came in and looked terrified. He said he was forced to swerve out of the way of a speeding car and then saw the body lying in the street."
Another resident, Mark Corbett, 28, who lives on nearby Underhill Road, said: "There was an awful lot of commotion after about 1pm - I saw emergency services arrive as I left my flat.
"I am told the man was shot after coming out of his house, but that is all I have heard."
Detectives from the Met's Operation Trident, which tackles gun crime in the black community, have been informed.
