It is not known when she was attacked, but Mrs Buchanan died on Tuesday.
Her husband, Ian, works at the Castle medical practice in Carrickfergus.
Practice manager Samantha Bailey said the staff were devastated.
"Jenny was a much-loved and respected lady by all the partners and staff in the practice," she said.
"We all knew her well. We were shocked and upset to hear such tragic news."
The Foreign Office have confirmed that they are dealing with the death of a British national in Romania.
