A parakeet spotted flying around a Liverpool department store has been rescued by the RSPCA.

The Rosella Parakeet, which is thought to be a pet or from a local aviary, flew through a window into a storeroom in John Lewis on Thursday afternoon.

Staff at the store called the RSPCA, who managed to catch the bird as it flew above the ladies and men's clothes on the first floor.

The RSPCA said it would now try to find out who the bird belonged to.

Derek Hampson, who rescued the parakeet, said it would be taken to the Liverpool Animal Centre in Halewood to be checked over.

If it had been microchipped it will be returned to its owner, but if not it will be re-homed.
