The mother of a dead baby girl found a year ago wrapped in a towel in woods in Redcar has still not been traced.

The baby, who was born premature and was named Leah by police, was found in the blue and purple striped towel in Kirkleatham.

Detectives followed up several leads and have now issued a new appeal for her to come forward.

A woman in her 30s was reportedly seen in an "emotional state" days before the discovery.

Police said the woman was seen near the village's St Cuthbert's Church, but has never been traced.

She had short bobbed hair and was wearing a black jumper.

On Friday, Cleveland Police renewed their appeal for the mother to come forward and said they would deal with situation "sensitively."

Det Sgt Andy McBride, said: "Leah's mother will surely be in an emotional and therefore vulnerable state with the anniversary upon us today.

"She can be reassured that we'll take a compassionate and sensitive approach if she does feel able to come forward and I'd urge her or her family to contact the police."
