Search for missing river canoeist Missing kayak man search resumes
(about 5 hours later)
Rescue services have been searching for a canoeist who was reported missing on the River Lune in Cumbria. The search has resumed for a man swept away after his boat capsized in a Cumbrian river.
Police, fire, ambulance, coastguard and mountain rescue teams were called to the river near Killington, east of Kendal on Wednesday afternoon. Two people are thought to have been in the kayak, which overturned on the River Lune, west of Sedburgh, on Wednesday afternoon.
The 47-year-old man is thought to have been swept downstream after getting into difficulties. Another canoeist managed to get to safety. One person managed to swim to safety, but the second, a 47-year-old man from west Wales, did not re-surface.
The search, which has been scaled down, will restart early on Thursday. Police divers, mountain rescue teams and specialist dog handlers are assisting in the search.
