Three killed in two road crashes Two OAPs among three crash dead
(about 19 hours later)
Three motorists have been killed in two serious accidents within hours in Aberdeenshire. Two pensioners in their late 70s were among three people killed in two crashes within hours in Aberdeenshire.
The Scottish Ambulance Service said a man and woman, believed to be in their 60s, had died in one crash the A944. The elderly victims were killed after a two-car accident on the A944 on Wednesday afternoon.
Grampian Police said the two-car accident happened near the Five Mile Garage, at about 1420 GMT. Grampian Police said the crash, involving a black Nissan Skyline and a red Vauxhall Corsa, happened near the Five Mile Garage at about 1420 GMT.
And a 41-year-old man taken to hospital under police escort after an earlier two-car accident near Banchory was also pronounced dead. In a separate incident, a 41-year-old man died following an accident in Drumoak.
In the A944 accident, one of the cars could be seen in a field near the garage. The driver of the Corsa, a 79-year-old male, and his 78-year-old female passenger, both from Aberdeen, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle involved was taken to hospital. The 30-year-old driver of the Nissan involved in the A944 accident, from the Westhill area, who was alone in his vehicle, sustained serious injuries which were not believed to be life threatening.
The accident was causing long traffic delays after diversions were set up. 'Busy stretch'
Both the east and westbound lanes between the Kingswells roundabout and the Westhill roundabout were expected to remain closed for a considerable length of time until a crash investigation has been completed. He was taken by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.
Insp Ewan Innes, of Grampian Police, said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families of those involved at this time.
"Inquiries are at a very early stage and it is too early to speculate as to the cause of this collision, but I can confirm that the Nissan was travelling westwards towards Westhill and the Corsa was travelling eastwards towards Aberdeen.
"Collision investigators have been at the locus carrying out a detailed examination and we will be carrying out further inquiries, in particular speaking to witnesses, over the next few days.

Police, ambulance and fire crews had earlier been called to South Deeside Road at about 1210 GMT. "This is a particularly busy stretch of road and I would be keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who witnessed the collision or to anyone who may have seen either of the cars involved."
The accident happened near the junction with Park Quarry and the turn off for Woodlands of Durris. As a result of the crash the A944 was closed for about 11 hours while investigators carried out their inquiries. It caused major traffic delays in the area.
The Scottish Ambulance Service said a man was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with "life-threatening" injuries, but police later said he had died. In the earlier incident on Wednesday, the 41-year-old male, from the Drumoak area, died in hospital after a two-car accident on the B9077 South Deeside Road, near Park Quarry in Drumoak.
The other motorist, 38, involved was believed to have escaped serious injury. He had been driving a silver/grey Peugeot 206.
Diversions were set up. The second vehicle, a red Mitsubishi GTO, was being driven by a 38-year-old male from the Banchory area, who was also alone in his car. He received relatively minor injuries.
Witness appeal
Insp Mike McDonald, of Grampian Police, said: "It is too early to speculate as to the cause of this collision but at this stage we do know that the Mitsubishi was travelling eastwards, toward Maryculter and the Peugeot westwards, towards Crathes.
"The vehicles collided on a relatively straight stretch of the carriageway just west of the junction to Park Quarry.
"We have spoken to a number of witness so far and I am grateful for their assistance.
"However I believe there may have been other motorists in the area at the time who witnessed the collision or would have seen one or other of the cars involved and I would be keen to speak to them also."
The B9077 was closed for some five hours.
