California faces stormy weather California hit by rain and snow
(about 20 hours later)
Residents of southern California face a risk of mudslides and flooding, as a winter storm brings snow, torrential rain and high winds. A powerful winter storm has brought heavy rain, strong winds and heavy mountain snow to California.
Up to 60cm (2 ft) of snow could fall over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, forecasters say, with heavy rain from Los Angeles to San Diego. The bad weather stretched from the Mexican border up to Oregon and Washington, AP news agency reported.
Snow has closed part of the Interstate 5 in the mountains north of LA, the California Highway Patrol said. Heavy snow forced the temporary closure of a 50-mile (80km) stretch of the Interstate 5 highway in the mountains north of Los Angeles.
The National Weather Service has also warned of storms in parts of Nevada. Authorities were on alert for floods in the San Francisco Bay area and along much of California's central coast.
In California, local officials said the heavy rains brought a particular threat of mudslides to areas devastated by wildfires last year, including Orange County and northern Los Angeles County. The city of Sierra Madre has warned residents they may need to leave their homes.
