The area was cordoned off on Saturday while forensic examinations took place and police were conducting house-to-house inquiries throughout the day. "I would reassure the community that our investigations will be thorough and will continue until we bring those responsible before the courts."
Police particularly want to speak to anyone seen acting suspiciously on Breck Road and Belmont Road before or after the murder, which happened just before 0130 GMT.
The area remained cordoned off on Sunday while forensic examinations took place.
Merseyside Police officers have been conducting house-to-house inquiries over the weekend.
Officers are also speaking to licensees in the area and examining CCTV footage.
