Dozens of animals have been rescued after a fire at a Berkshire rainforest attraction.

It broke out in the boiler room of The Living Rainforest, in Hampstead Norreys, near Newbury, on Friday night.

Snakes and lizards being housed in a quarantine room next to the room had to be moved to safety by fire crews and members of staff.

Some of the cold sensitive creatures had to be taken home by staff until heating was restored.

The centre remained closed all weekend.

"Most of the electrics are now back on," a spokesman for Living Rainforest said.

"But there is still no heating, so we've installed temporary heating in one of our glasshouses.

"Thankfully, we managed to contain the blaze and move cold-sensitive animals to safety with the help of the Newbury fire department and our dedicated animal and maintenance teams."

He said every effort was being made to re-open as soon as possible but he was not in a position to confirm when.
