Rapper MIA has given birth to a baby boy - days after performing at the Grammys ceremony in Los Angeles.

She wrote on her MySpace website that her son, born on Wednesday, was "healthy, fine, beautiful, and the most amazing thing on this planet".

The baby's father is the London-born performer's fiance, musician Benjamin Bronfman. The couple have declined to release their son's name.

MIA, 31, said she went into labour hours after appearing at the Grammys.

Her baby was due on 8 February - the same day as the ceremony.

She took part in a scene-stealing performance at the show along with Kanye West, Jay-Z, TI and Lil' Wayne, wearing an outfit exposing her swollen stomach.

"Me and baby are putting our tour dates for 2010 together, making mix tapes, and figuring out a way to break out of the hospital!," she wrote.

Her debut album Arular was nominated for the UK's Mercury Prize in 2005, but she has gone onto achieve greater success in the US, where she now lives.

She had two Grammy nominations this year - her track Paper Planes was nominated for record of the year, while Swagga Like Us was in contention for best rap song.

Her track O Saya, which features in the film Slumdog Millionaire, is shortlisted for best original song at the Oscars.
