Supt Bruce Cameron of Nottinghamshire Police said he did not believe bad weather conditions played a part in the crash.
He said: "The weather was clear the road was not icy at the time. My officers will consider all possibilities as to the cause of this accident.
"We need to find out the cause of this collision and get some closure for the families if we possibly can.
"We're asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact police and help officers find out the cause of this terrible accident."
