Six people have been killed in a car bomb attack in north-eastern Colombia, officials say.

They say a number of people were injured in the blast in the town of Convencion, some 650km (400 miles) north-east of the capital Bogota.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but officials believe a rebel group was behind it.

The leftist rebel groups Farc and ELN are both active in the area, close to the Venezuelan border.

"The death toll from the attack is three police officers and three civilians, and we have at least other 10 wounded," Convencion city official Leonardo Angarita was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

Colombia has been ravaged by a decades-long conflict involving outlawed armed groups and drug cartels. Gross violations of human rights have occurred.
