One Welsh council, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has already decided to withdraw home-to-school transport on Monday. Fourteen schools have so far been closed, including eight in Rhondda Cynon Taf, where the council has withdrawn home-to-school transport.
The council said any decision to shut schools would be left to individual head teachers and governors. The Bwlch, Rhigos and Maerdy mountain roads in Rhondda Cynon Taf are closed.
Two school closures in the area announced on Sunday evening were Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, Aberdare, and Ysgol Gyfun Cymer, Rhondda. Snow and ice also means Rhiwbina Hill in Cardiff is closed.
The council said it was trying to minimise the effect of the weather on main roads. But it said the fall in salt reserves had left supplies in a "critical condition", and no side roads were being treated. So far, nine have said they will close, including Bryncelynnog Comprehensive, Aberdare Boys Comprehensive School, Mountain Ash Comprehensive and Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari.
