The family of a woman who died after slipping on an icy pavement have claimed council officials only gritted the path after she fell.

Isabel McCulloch, 55, from Kirriemuir in Angus, was walking her two dogs last Wednesday when she slipped and banged her head.

X-rays at Ninewells hospital in Dundee showed bleeding on her brain. Mrs McCulloch went into a coma and died.

Angus Council has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Mrs McCulloch's husband Donald, 65, was too upset to talk about the incident, which happened near their family home.

But children Douglas, 23, and Donna, 26, said they were seeking legal advice over her death.

'Terrible tragedy'

Riding instructor Donna said: "In our opinion, the council were at fault and we are taking legal action.

"Our father is devastated as he and our mum were inseparable. It is almost as if two lives have been lost here. We will be making sure the council are held to account for this."

Douglas said: "My mother fell on a busy route near a school. This could easily have happened to a child. If the council should keep any pavement clear, it was this one.

"They only salted the pavement on Thursday after my mother had died. But by then it was too late."

Kirriemuir SNP councillor Iain Gaul said: "This is a terrible tragedy. I fully expect Angus Council to carry out a thorough investigation."

David Sawers, chief executive of Angus Council, said: "There is no shortage of salt in the Angus area.

"But I'll be instructing a report into this tragedy as soon as possible."
