Thieves stole a paramedic's car from an ambulance station while he was on an emergency call, the Ambulance Service has said.

They entered the Omagh station early on Saturday morning and took car keys from the locker room, moments after the crew left on a call-out.

The car was later found crashed near Fintona, County Tyrone.

The NI Ambulance Service condemned the thieves and appealed for anyone with information to call the police.

"This member of staff has dedicated his career to providing an emergency response to the most vulnerable in our society at their time of greatest need," a spokesman said.

"This is in stark contrast to the actions of this thief or thieves who stole his car which is a necessity for him to travel to work in Omagh as he lives in Derry.

"Whilst he was responding in the middle of the night to a call for help, the thief was skulking around in the dark waiting for his opportunity."
