A number of buses were drafted in by police to help take people affected away from the area in Balham. Emergency crews were called to Balham after what Southern Gas Networks described as a "small" gas leak in the area at about 0200 GMT.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at about 0430 GMT. Metropolitan Police officers helped evacuate residents to Balham Leisure Centre. Police helped transport residents to Balham Leisure Centre.
