A newborn baby boy was airlifted from Shetland to Aberdeen as rescue crews battled against heavy snow.

The baby was born by caesarean section in hospital in Lerwick but needed urgent medical treatment on the mainland.

An RAF Lossiemouth helicopter, carrying an incubator and a medical team, flew the baby to Sumburgh Airport where an air ambulance took him to hospital.

The baby was said to be in a stable condition in hospital in Aberdeen.

The helicopter picked up the incubator and medical team from Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin and then flew north to Shetland.

Battling against heavy winds on their journey north, the RAF crew was forced to land at playing fields in Lerwick after they could not get into the small airstrip at Tingwall.

After stabilising the baby at the Gilbert Bain Hospital, ambulance crews transferred him in an incubator to the waiting RAF helicopter, which flew the baby to Sumburgh Airport for the air ambulance transfer.
