'WWII bomb' discovered at harbour All-clear after WWII bomb scare
(about 2 hours later)
What is believed to be a World War Two bomb has been uncovered by a dredger working off Warrenpoint Harbour. The Royal Navy has given the all-clear for business to return to normal at Warrenpoint Harbour after a suspected WWII bomb was found on Friday morning.
The device was found at 0900 GMT on Friday and was placed into a barge alongside the dredger. It was uncovered by a dredger at about 0900 GMT.
Peter Conway, chief Executive of Warrenpoint Harbour Authority, said the barge had been brought into an isolated part of the harbour. It was put onto a barge and taken to a secluded part of the harbour for examination. Shipping in and out of Warrenpoint was halted.
"It will wait here for investigations by the police and the bomb disposal unit," he said. The Navy has said there is no longer a risk and the harbour is now getting back to normal.
An exclusion zone has been set up around the discovery.
