Forensics teams were examining the area in Llanbadarn Fawr near Aberystwyth on Friday morning.
It was discovered by a West Highland Terrier during a walk with his owner Gareth Hughes, who said he thought it might be a pet's grave.
Mr Hughes said he regularly used the wood to walk his dog, Scouser, but had not seen the grave on previous occasions.

He said it was square with sticks marking out the corners. He said a toy, a child's sock and a vase of flowers had been left there, but the soil had not been disturbed recently.
"If there's something different you can guarantee Scouser will spot it," added Mr Hughes, 64.
"I hadn't seen the grave before, but Scouser spotted it and went over and started barking.
"My initial thoughts were that children had buried a goldfish or some other pet.
"I can't think there's anything sinister about it."
The wood is not far from the Llanbadarn campus of the town's university, where the Institute of Rural Sciences is sited.
Police were alerted after Mr Hughes made the discovery last Saturday and informed his daughter who works for Aberystwyth University. She then informed the university's estates office.
The woodland area is popular with people walking their dogs. |
