Murderer stabbed wife 500 times | Murderer stabbed wife 500 times |
(about 1 hour later) | |
A man who stabbed his wife more than 500 times at their Wirral home has been jailed for life for her murder.
Elaine Bailey, 39, was attacked by her husband Robert, 46, at the house in Locker Park, Greasby, on 11 September.
Liverpool Crown Court heard she was so badly mutilated she could only be identified by her dental records.
Bailey, a bus driver, admitted murder and Judge Henry Globe QC ordered him to serve a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years.
The court heard how Bailey used several knives and a double-pronged carving fork during the attack.
Judge Globe said Mrs Bailey, a mother-of-three, was still alive when many of her wounds were inflicted.
"The pattern of injury was particularly unusual. The pathologist is of the opinion that those stab wounds were inflicted in life. That alone is a horrifying statement," he said.
It was also revealed in court that after he had killed his wife, he went round to a neighbour's house and banged on her window with a foot-long knife.
She called police and he was arrested soon afterwards.
Bailey, who was receiving medication for depression, said he could remember little of what he had done that afternoon. |
