Man dies after 300ft fells plunge Second walker dies in the Lakes
(about 4 hours later)
A walker has died after falling about 320ft (100m) in the Lake District, police have said. A second walker has died in icy conditions in the Lake District, say mountain rescuers.
The man, who was in his 60s, was one of a group out walking in icy conditions near Pavey Ark, north of Windermere, on Wednesday afternoon. Teams had been searching for the 60-year-old man, who failed to return from Old Dungeon Ghyll, near Great Langdale.
The Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team and an RAF helicopter were called after reports the walker had suffered serious injuries. Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue, which had been searching along with a helicopter from RAF Leeming, confirmed a body had been found.
The man later died in the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven. Another man in his 60s died on Wednesday after falling 320ft (100m) near Pavey Ark, north of Windermere.
A spokesman for the rescue team said it appeared all the walkers were having problems in the difficult conditions on the fells, which have been hit by heavy snowfalls. In that incident, rescuers were called after reports a walker had slipped and suffered serious injuries.
Last week, the leader of Keswick Mountain Rescue warned walkers to beware of treacherous icy conditions on the Cumbrian fells. Rescuers said the dead man was with a group of walkers who got into difficulties in icy conditions.
Mark Hodgson said heavy snow and ice made fell-walking dangerous. He was airlifted to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, but later died.
Mountain rescuers have urged walkers to be prepared for the wintry conditions on the fells.
