A spokesman for Scottish Power said the areas affected by the power cuts were across the country, which was slowing down attempts to repair the damage. Scottish Power said areas worst affected by disruption to supply were north Ayrshire and Lanarkshire.
It is expected that thousands of homes will still be affected overnight. The company said about 10,000 homes were facing a second night without electricity.
