Putin supports dialogue in all areas, Kremlin says after Trump G7 invitation Putin & Trump talk Russia’s possible participation in G7 summit during phone call
(about 3 hours later)
Russian President Vladimir Putin supports dialogue “in all areas,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on Washington’s G7 invitation to Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump talked on the phone, discussing Russia’s possible participation in the G7 summit, Covid-19 response and the dialogue on strategic stability, the Kremlin said.
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he would postpone a G7 summit that he had hoped to hold next month until September or later. The list of invitees will be expanded to include Australia, Russia, South Korea and India, according to the US leader. “Trump informed [Putin] of his idea to hold the G7 summit with a possible invitation of the leaders of Russia, Australia, India and South Korea,” the statement read.
However, Peskov said on Monday that Russia needs to see more details before responding to the US proposal and to understand whether it is official. Putin has not yet accepted Trump’s invitation, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov clarified. Moscow needs to find out more details about the upcoming summit, including its agenda and the format of the country’s participation, to make the final decision.
Many questions remain, including those concerning the summit’s agenda and the format of Russia’s participation, Peskov said. He also noted that there are convenient and efficient mechanisms for international dialogue such as the G20 group of the world’s largest economies. On Saturday, Trump announced that he would postpone the G7 event that he had hoped to hold next month until September or later, but the list of the invited leaders will be expanded.
The conversation between Putin and Trump was “constructive, business-like and substantive,” the Kremlin said in a statement.  Besides the G7, Putin and Trump discussed measures implemented in the two countries against the novel coronavirus, as well as the situation in the oil market, agreeing that the OPEC+ deal was contributing to a gradual restoration of demand and the stabilization of prices.
