A search has resumed for a New Year holidaymaker who was swept into the sea from rocks in Cornwall.

The 24-year-old Derby man was with a group of friends at Trevone Bay, near Padstow on Sunday afternoon.

Police said he had been at a cliff area in "atrocious" weather conditions when he was struck by a large wave and knocked into the sea.

A lifeboat crew and helicopter search was called off in the night and a shore search started on Monday morning.

'Infra-red equipment'

Weather conditions were very severe with a three to four-metre swell and strong westerly winds at the time.

The man, who was wearing only shorts and a long sleeved top, had gone for a closer look at a sea cave with a friend.

A wave hit him as he stood on a ledge within the cavity, sweeping him into the sea. His friend was washed further along the ledge.

Friends were unable to rescue him and called the emergency services.

Flares and infra-red equipment were used in the search by the Padstow lifeboat, Falmouth Coastguard, a Navy search and rescue helicopter, which was called off at about 1830 GMT due to worsening light and weather.

The man's family who live in the Derby area have been informed that he is missing.
