A former Bahamas senator has been granted bail on charges of conspiracy to extort money from John Travolta after the death of the actor's son.

Pleasant Bridgewater is accused of plotting with a paramedic to demand money from Mr Travolta in exchange for suppressing a document.

The document related to the treatment of Jett, 16, who died on the island after suffering a seizure.

Ms Bridgewater is due back in court on 11 February.

Bail was set at $50,000 (£34,700). Ms Bridgewater resigned her seat on the Bahamas senate after she was arrested. She continues to works as a lawyer on the island.

Tarino Lightbourne, the ambulance driver accused of taking part in the conspiracy, has pleaded not guilty. Ms Bridgewater was not required to enter a plea.
