The prosecutor said: "Conor Black, who was 16, died as a result of an unprovoked and brutal assault.
"He was struck violently over the head with a full can of beer then he was stabbed in the back, he never stood a chance."
The jury heard the defendant was unable to read or write properly and had been unable to tell the time or tie his own shoelaces when he was 10.
