An inquiry into the death of a 58-year-old woman from the Swansea area, who died in police custody on Friday, is to be independently managed.

The woman was arrested in Oystermouth Road at about 0630 GMT on suspicion of a driving offence but died later at Swansea Central Police station.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to manage the investigation into her death.

The woman's identity is not being released until relatives are contacted.

Two paramedics were unable to revive the woman, who was pronounced dead at the police station.

IPCC Commissioner Tom Davies said: "This was a tragic incident and my condolences go to all concerned.

"South Wales Police referred the death in custody to the IPCC and I deployed two of our investigators to the scene to do an assessment.

"The IPCC investigation will be treated as managed until after the post mortem, and carried out by South Wales Police professional standards department under my direction and control."

A post mortem examination will be carried out by a Home Office pathologist on Tuesday.
