Pair face UDA boss murder charge Men deny UDA member murder charge
(about 3 hours later)
Two men are to appear in court charged with murdering a loyalist paramilitary leader in October 2000. Two more men have been charged with the 2000 murder of senior Ulster Defence Association member Tommy English.
The charges follow a new investigation into the murder of Ulster Defence Association chief Tommy English. Alexander Wood, 32, of Milewater Way, Newtownabbey and Jason Loughlin, 33, Ballyvessey Park , New Mossley, were charged with murdering Mr English.
The accused are both aged 32. One of them also faces a charge of membership of a proscribed organisation. Mr Wood was also charged with Ulster Volunteer Force membership.
Six men have previously appeared in court charged in connection with Mr English's murder in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. A detective told Belfast Magistrates Court he believed he could connect the accused to the charges. Both men deny the charges.
Both men, who are to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Thursday, were arrested as part of inquiries by the Historical Enquiries Team - a specialist police unit set up to investigate unsolved killings throughout the Northern Ireland conflict. A solicitor representing the men asked the detective if there was any forensic evidence linking them to the charges. The detective replied "not yet".
The lawyer said Mr Loughlin strenuously denied the charges and that Mr Wood had been questioned about the killing eight years ago and "denied involvement then and now".
Eight people have now been charged in connection with the murder of Mr English, who was shot dead in front of his wife at their home on the Ballyduff Estate, Newtownabbey on Halloween night.
The killing took place during a feud between rival UDA and UVF factions which claimed seven lives.
