Hirst boosts Sir Bobby's charity

Internationally-renowned artist Damien Hirst has lent his support to Sir Bobby Robson's cancer charity.

Hirst has donated one of his "spin-circle" paintings, which is expected to raise more than £10,000.

The former Turner prize-winner said Sir Bobby, who is battling cancer for the fifth time, was a legend.

His charity was set up in 2008 and has already raised £1m for a new medical research centre at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

The circular painting will be displayed at the Lazarides Gallery on Newcastle's Quayside and prospective buyers are invited to register their interest with the gallery.

It will be handed over by the 75-year-old former England and Newcastle United boss, from County Durham.

Sir Bobby Robson said: "I think it's a fantastic and generous gesture from Mr Hirst.

"He's clearly a very talented artist and I must say I'll be sorry to give up this wonderful painting.

"I'm sure we'll find a very appreciative buyer who will enjoy owning this striking artwork and they will also have the satisfaction of knowing they have helped a very important cause."

Mr Hirst said: "Bobby Robson is an inspiration to so many, a legend."
