A father-of-one who died after being shot in the head in Edinburgh has been named by police.

Martyn Barclay, 26, was found unconscious by a member of the public in Hazelwood Grove at 0600 GMT on Saturday, but later died.

Lothian and Borders Police have launched a murder inquiry into the shooting in the Inch area of the city.

Mr Barclay lived in Hazelwood Grove. A police cordon remains in place around the street.

Ch Insp Donnie Mackinnon, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "Clearly this was a shocking and tragic incident that has robbed a young child of a father, and caused unimaginable heartache to the victim's family.

"At the same time, we have had an outstanding response from the local community, who have rallied together in support of the police.

"The goodwill we have received from people locally is extremely heartening, and I would appeal for that goodwill and patience to continue as our investigations take place.

"At this time I would like to reiterate our earlier appeals for any information from the public that can assist us as we carry out enquiries."

Crocheted hat

He said that detectives were particularly keen to speak to a man and woman in their early 20s who visited the petrol station near to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They were both described as being about 5ft 6in, with the man wearing a brown leather jacket and jeans.

The woman, who had long blonde hair, was wearing a grey woollen crocheted hat and a short black leather jacket.

Ch Insp MacKinnon added: "They both came from the direction of the high flats at Mordeun, and we would like them to come forward as soon as possible.

"At the same time, we remain keen to speak to anyone who noticed anything suspicious or out of the ordinary in the area of the Inch early on Saturday morning.

"The area lies close to two main arterial routes, namely Old Dalkeith Road and Gilmerton Road, and we would be keen to speak to any delivery drivers or anyone else using either of these routes at that time, who noticed anything suspicious, to get in touch."
