Gunmen and suicide bombers have stormed a Sikh religious premise in the heart of the Afghan capital’s old city on Wednesday morning, the Interior Ministry said. Afghanistan’s Tolo News reports at least 11 people were killed and 11 others injured in the attack.
One attacker has been shot and three others are still fighting with security forces, the channel reported.
It’s so far unclear who the attackers are. Defense forces arrived at the scene and blocked off the place of worship, known as a Gurdwara. "People are stuck inside the building and [security forces] are trying to rescue them," said Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian.
Narindra Singh Khalsa, a member of the Afghan parliament who represents the tiny Sikh community, said at least four people were killed. He explained that when the attack happened the place was packed with worshipers. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, AFP news agency reported. Defense forces arrived at the scene, blocked off the place of worship, known as a ‘Gurdwara’, and engaged in a gun battle with the attackers.
"There are about 150 people inside the temple. Families are living there and they usually gather to offer prayers in the mornings," said Anarkali Kaur Honaryar, a Sikh member of the Afghan parliament.

The Sikh community was targeted in 2018, when an Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) suicide bombing killed more than a dozen people in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad.
