Roeder rejects Crouch speculation Benitez dismisses Crouch rumours
(about 2 hours later)
Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has played down reports linking the club with a move for Liverpool's Peter Crouch. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez says he will not be selling Peter Crouch in the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old England striker was rumoured to be the subject of a £12m bid from Newcastle, but Roeder says there is nothing in the speculation. Reports on Friday suggested Benitez would sell Crouch to Newcastle to fund the purchase of Valencia's David Villa.
"It is pure speculation and I would be surprised if he ended up becoming a Newcastle player," said Roeder. However, Mapgpies boss Glenn Roeder described the reports as "pure speculation" and Benitez said: "We are not interested in Villa.
"He's a fantastic player but at this moment we're not thinking of buying him and we're not planning to sell Crouch."
Newcastle were rumoured to be prepared to pay £12m for 25-year-old Crouch, who cost Liverpool £7m 18 months ago.
