Gale force winds and heavy rain are set to lash western parts of the UK, prompting a number of weather warnings. Heavy rain and storms are set to lash western parts of the UK then sweep eastward, prompting a number of severe weather warnings.
Winds of up to 100mph could hit parts of Northern Ireland and north-west Scotland, as well as Orkney, through Saturday evening into Sunday morning. In Northern Ireland a motorist was killed when a tree hit her car during high winds and 24,000 homes locally were left without power.
Gales and heavy rain are expected to affect western Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and western England. Winds of up to 100mph are forecast there with gales also expected in north-west Scotland and Orkney.
Rain will affect all parts of the UK by Sunday morning and snow may fall on high ground in Scotland. Storms are also expected in western Scotland, Wales and western England.
The BBC Weather centre's Susan Powell said: "Winds gusting up to 100mph could affect exposed parts of north-west Northern Ireland, and the far north west of Scotland, areas such as the Outer Hebrides, north-west Highlands and Orkney between 6pm and 6am." The motorist killed in Northern Ireland was a woman in her 30s whose car was struck by a tree on Strangford Road in Downpatrick at 1600 GMT.
"By the end of the night it looks like we could have outbreaks of rain across the whole of the UK. In Wales, forecasters warn that winds strong enough to cause structural damage to buildings could affect western areas.
"It's good it's happening on a weekend and overnight, as there will be less disruption," she added. Gale force winds gusting up to 70mph are forecast to bring heavy rain to exposed coasts around Gwynedd, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.
In Scotland's Western Isles, people are being told not to travel with severe gales forecast for the Outer Hebrides.
The high winds will also affect western parts of Argyll and Bute.
