Top Afghan political leader Abdullah unharmed in attack on ceremony in Kabul Top Afghan leader Abdullah forced to flee ceremony which came under ATTACK as he gave speech (VIDEO)
(about 1 hour later)
An attack happened at a ceremony in the Afghan capital on Friday where a top Afghan political leader, Abdullah Abdullah, was present but he escaped unharmed, according to his spokesman. At least 18 people were wounded in an attack against Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah. He was forced to flee the area after a gun battle spontaneously erupted which included rocket fire.
“The attack started with a boom, apparently a rocket landed in the area, Abdullah and some other politicians… escaped the attack unhurt,” the spokesman, Fraidoon Kwazoon, who was also present, told Reuters by telephone from Kabul. Tensions have risen in the country in recent weeks as Abdullah has challenged the results of the September 2019 presidential election which elected the incumbent Ashraf Ghani. Abdullah also declared victory. Eyewitness footage from the scene shows Abdullah interrupted during a commemoration ceremony for the killing of Abdul Ali Mazani a leader of the predominantly Shia Hazara ethnic group in 1995.
Broadcaster Tolo News showed live footage of people running for cover as gunfire was heard. Special police forces had been sent to the area, Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack or whether there were any casualties. "The attack started with a boom, apparently a rocket landed in the area, Abdullah and some other politicians ... escaped the attack unhurt," eyewitness Fraidoon Kwazoon said.
Meanwhile, Afghan President President Ashraf Ghani called it a “a crime against humanity and against the national unity of Afghanistan.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. The Taliban recently resumed attacks against government forces despite signing a peace agreement with US but the group has denied involvement in the attack.
