A viral disease that is potentially fatal to horses has appeared in County Londonderry.

The Department of Agriculture has confirmed "swamp fever" was found in a foal which has since been put down.

It is the first case of the disease - which does not affect humans - in Northern Ireland, but there have been 16 confirmed cases in the Republic.

Officials have imposed restrictions on the premises at the centre of the outbreak.

The infected foal may have had contact with horses from south of the border.
