US retailer JC Penney has fired its chief operating officer Catherine West, six months after she took the job.

Ms West will leave her post immediately, and the company declined to give any reasons for its decision.

Store operations, property development, and the logistics departments will now report to Myron "Mike" Ullman, JC Penney's chairman and chief executive.

Analysts said they were surprised by Ms West's sacking as the 1,037-store retailer had been performing well.

Shares of JC Penney fell by 80 cents, 1%, to $77.60 in New York following the announcement.
