A dance to honour an Orkney backpacker murdered in New Zealand is being held to mark the first anniversary of her death.

Karen Aim, who was 26, died following a night out in the tourist resort of Taupo in January last year.

Hundreds of people are expected to be at a ceilidh in Karen's memory in Orkney on Saturday, and relatives have expressed their gratitude.

A teenage boy, who was 14 at the time, has been charged with her murder.

Karen's father, Brian, said he had been moved by the kindness displayed by the local community.

Traditional Scottish bands will play, and a schoolboy will perform a piece of fiddle music written specially for the occasion, titled Karen Elizabeth Aim.

It was previously announced that an arts scholarship was to be set up in New Zealand in her honour.

The idea for the scholarships came from her love and professional involvement in the visual arts while she was in New Zealand's north island.
